Orkla, the Nidar factory

- Christmas marzipan is completely safe

Apurgo discovered a water leak at the Nidar factory in Trondheim. If the leak had lasted for a month, Orkla would have paid more than NOK 280,000 extra in water and wastewater fees.

Orkla is taking its environmental and sustainability responsibility one step further. Using technology developed by Apurgo in Trøndelag, they are uncovering hidden water leaks. The factory has already saved thousands of kroner in water charges and also achieved major environmental benefits.

The leak was discovered on July 4, in a cooling machine at Nidar. The estimated additional consumption would have amounted to more than NOK 280,000 if the leak had remained undetected throughout the month.

– “Apurgo has definitely been worth the investment,” says Finn Jarle Sørli, Maintenance Manager at the factory.

– We’ve done a few rounds looking for leaks before, so we know very well that even small amounts of water add up to large sums.

The Christmas marzipan is safe

The factory installed the ApurgoM3 water treatment system in 2018. As a result, they no longer need to perform hot water flushes to combat Legionella and other bacteria.

– “We don’t have to worry about Legionella at all, because we know that ApurgoM3 and the operations center are looking after us. This has made the workday of the operators here both safer and easier,” says Sørli.

As an added bonus, ApurgoM3 has a sensor that detects the hidden leaks that would otherwise be impossible to find. This is what picked up the big water leak in July.

The leakage sensor constantly monitors the water consumption in the building, so the system quickly notices when something is out of the ordinary. Apurgo’s operations center follows the cloud-based operational monitoring and quickly notified Nidar of the problem.

– It took a very short time to find and fix the problem, if it had lasted the whole month we would have ended up paying over NOK 280,000 extra in fees alone,” says Sørli.

So why not focus on the Christmas marzipan instead?

– Yes, the Christmas marzipan is completely safe,” laughs Sørli.

Passionate about water

It’s not just Orkla and the Nidar factory that benefit from the good Apurgo system.

CEO of Apurgo is passionate about water

According to Statistics Norway, as much as 30% of our drinking water escapes through leaks. This costs society hundreds of millions of kroner annually, and not least, it wastes one of the world’s most invaluable resources – clean water.

Lise Marie Nergaard, CEO of Apurgo, is passionate about water.

– It’s not a matter of course that we have clean water. Once we’ve won the water lottery, it’s a shame that we’re wasting almost a third of it,” says Nergaard enthusiastically.
